When this project began, a discussion was held about what Stars & Stripes would do after she was restored. Two things were agreed upon:
First, she should sail but never race again. Like a great prize fighter, her history has already been written and racing could only diminish her reputation.
Second, she should not be locked away in a building. She would be a real sailboat and travel around America bringing her story to the people.
Once Stars & Stripes is restored, she will become a floating museum.
The goal is for her to visit up to five yacht clubs (or sailing venues) every year.
Stars & Stripes could be accompanied by a traveling road show which would tell the story of the 1987 America’s Cup through displays, artifacts and videos.
The visit to each club could be a three day festival. One one day would be for juniors, one day for adults and one day for fundraising and history (i.e. appearances by original Stars & Stripes team members and other people involved in the 1987 America’s Cup).
At each club, there will likely be 12, 15 and 18 year-old sailors who would learn the history, see the videos and get inspired to try for greatness themselves.
Over time, Stars & Stripes could visit sailors all over the country. By doing this, Stars & Stripes will continue her positive and lasting impact on our nation.
When not on tour, Stars & Stripes could be homeported in New York Harbor where she could continue inspiring people by sailing them past the Statue of Liberty.
